Anthony
Anthony
Anthony downplays his skills and traits, and tends to hang back with the staff rather than rush to greet new folks. It is so important to seek him out and connect with him, as he has a lot to say and really benefits from mentoring and positive reinforcement he gets from adults. Some of Anthony’s shyness comes from self-consciousness due to his deformities, but he beams handsomely when praised and given attention. He can speak but often gets shy, so encouraging him to verbalize is very important. He has a great sense of humor, so joking around is a great way to get him out of his shell. When possible, Anthony should be given leadership, encouragement, mentorship, and educational opportunities for building his self-esteem and uncovering his potential. Anthony makes significant, daily contributions to the Westhaven community. He helps staff with chores, cares and feeds kids, and provides a much needed extra set of eyes and capable hands. Anthony is deaf but otherwise fully functional. He reads lips, so it is important to stand close to him while speaking. He is bright but hesitant about his capabilities. Anthony is so mature and responsible that he has earned permission to leave Westhaven and walk to the store himself to buy candy.
